Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.

Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.

The substance had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials say preliminary tests show the substance was probably human blood.

"There is still no clue as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.

A high-ranking political figure said the attack rendered him without words and required to be addressed rapidly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right attack in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter focusing on individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
