The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
