Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
